ZipFlex Abalone Purfling
Now it's easy to install beautiful abalone purfling.
Creating shell purflings used to mean breaking pieces of shell and installing them one by one. ZipFlex® is a brilliant idea that makes that unnecessary.
Great results, even if it's your first inlay job!
ZipFlex is select green abalone shell on a flexible base that bends to any curve. Place it between wood outer bindings and glue them in as one piece. Zip!—you've inlaid the soundhole!
These shell colors—pastel reds blues and greens—are a good choice for accenting any wood. We especially like the way they stand out in darker tonewoods like rosewood and red cedar.
Available in 3 widths
Depth: .055" (1.4mm)
Length: 15" (381mm)
The flexible backing can be slighty wider than the abalone, measure before routing for a perfect fit.
ZipFlex purfling was developed by Kevin Ryan, of Kevin Ryan Guitars.
Tip: We recommend installing with super glue. Apply a thin coat of shellac or lacquer in the channel before gluing to keep the super glue from darkening the surrounding wood grain.
