Professional results at home
ColorTone nitrocellulose aerosols are designed for professional finishing, right out of the can. These aerosols are easy to apply, and perfect for new finishes or re-fins. We designed the lacquers and the spray nozzles especially for guitar finishing. Nitro lacquer is the traditional choice for fine instruments, and is what guitars from the Golden Era of the 1950s and earlier are finished with.
Everything you need to totally finish one instrument from start to finish. It's all there—from sealing the wood to spraying the final clear coat. It's never been easier to get a truly flawless finish with simple to use professional-grade aerosols. We've picked the right stuff you need to get the look you want, no need to guess on what filler, color, or how much lacquer you need. It's all there and ready for you to spray your perfect finish. We've written up instructions for each set and our tech team is here to help if you have any questions.
Each 'burst is as unique as a fingerprint!
These sets are designed for closed-grain woods that don't need filler like maple, alder, and spruce. Pick the color that's the perfect look for your build:
12236 Early Kalamazoo Tobacco Sunburst
This is the timeless burst, often called Cremona Brown, you've seen on Gibson® L-5s, mandolins, and other priceless instruments from the 1920s to the 1940s. The Red Mahogany band in the burst makes this finish come alive and blends the Vintage Amber and Tobacco Brown together beautifully.
2237 Later Kalamazoo Tobacco Sunburst
This is the burst you've seen on J-45s, ES-175s, and Gibson®'s from the late 1940s and 1950s. The Cherry Red in the sunburst draws your eye into the burst and gives it a dramatic look. The Vintage Amber, Cherry Red, and Tobacco Brown are bold and blend together seamlessly.
"I see a lot of vintage guitars in my shop. Most aerosols don't really come close to looking like the colors they are intended to. These ColorTone finishes nail the look of vintage beauties I've had on my bench."
—Erick Coleman, guitar repairman and StewMac tech advisor

Tip: Use warm lacquer for better results
Pro shops spray heated lacquer because cold lacquer spatters, requiring extra sanding. You should warm up your aerosol lacquer too, simply soak the cans in a sink of warm tap water. See our video with even more tips on how to spray a professional finish at home.
