StewMac Gold Fretwire

Get longer life and a new look from your frets.
Gold fretwire is durable, easy to work with, and adds a unique style to your builds.

For many years, your choices in fretwire were very limited. Nickel-silver has been used for decades, but it tarnishes and wears over time. Some prefer the extreme long life of stainless steel, but it can be hard on your tools and difficult to install. Now we've discovered a new material that has the best for both materials: it combines durability, easy workability, and an attractive look.

Order by the pound for tidy savings!
Our bulk fretwire is supplied in convenient clear storage tubes, to keep your wire organized and your workbench uncluttered. You'll save 50% or more when you order fretwire wire by the pound.

Our gold fretwire is made primarily of C425 copper alloy instead of nickel. This makes the wire harder, more durable, and more resistant to corrosion than traditional nickel-silver frets. The copper also gives the wire a gold color that compliments any appointments. Best of all, it's easy to work with and doesn't wear tools like stainless steel fretwire can.

Add a touch of gold to your builds
Similar in hardness and composition to Jescar EVO wire, the frets play fast and smooth, and stay that way! Since there is no nickel, it's also a good choice for those with nickel allergies.

For a custom look, we love the gold color. It looks great on dark and light fingerboards, and on finished or unfinished boards. Many vintage instruments from Harmony, Kay, and other 1950s Chicago-area makers used a similar colored material that matches this wire very well.

Medium fretwire is our most popular width and is used extensively by Martin, Fender and Gibson. If you're matching Gibson® "jumbo" fretwire from the late '50s, use our Medium width.

Wide fretwire is favored for string bending and is used on many modern electric guitars and basses.

Our fretwire is sized to fit a 0.023" (0.58mm) fret slot width.

We supply our fretwire in 2-foot straight lengths. Order 6 feet for a complete guitar or bass fret job, and 4 feet for a mandolin, banjo or ukulele.
