StewMac Fretboard Removal Wedge

Designed like a classic draw knife, but redesigned by our techs for safer fretboard removal. The wedge-shaped blade opens the glue joint without cutting into the wood.

Removing a fretboard is a tricky job at best. You have to have complete control to cut through just the glue, and not into the neck or fingerboard. You also need controlled pressure to prevent pulling up too hard on the fingerboard and accidentally warping, twisting, cracking it or worse.

Safe and controlled fretboard separation
The stiff high-carbon steel blade has a long thin edge that is capable of cleanly entering the seam between the neck and fingerboard. We’ve purposely designed the blade to be thin at the edge—but not sharp. This is crucial so the blade glides through the softened glue, and not into the wood grain. The two handles let you evenly move up the neck with complete control of the blade.

The gentle wedge-shaped cross-section exerts the ideal pressure to help the glue yield, making it easier to separate the pieces. The blade can be heated and moisture applied to help speed the work. The blade's rounded edges prevent digging into the wood. For smaller jobs we recommned our Seam Separation Wedge
