StewMac Prop-Jack

The right pressure, right where you need it.
No more fumbling inside a guitar with makeshift solutions like pieces of wood, turnbuckles, or bulky hardware. The Prop-Jack was built from the ground up for precision brace repairs and crack reinforcement—because great tools help make great repairs.

Designed by master luthier Doug Proper of The Guitar Specialist, this clever clamp gives you controlled pressure deep inside an acoustic guitar, right where you need it. Unlike bulky alternatives, it's spring-loaded for easy one-handed positioning, even in tight spaces where visibility is limited. Once in place, a knurled thumbwheel lets you fine-tune and lock in the perfect amount of tension.

We worked with Doug to make it even better, adding two interchangeable heads:

  • A notched tip that grips braces securely, preventing slip-offs.
  • A magnetic tip for aligning with the top of the guitar—perfect for crack repairs.

With three sizes available, the Prop-Jack fits virtually any instrument, from ukuleles to jumbos. If you work on acoustics, this is the tool you've been waiting for.

More repairs inside acoustic intruments:

  • Holds a brace, bridge plate, or patching cleats for acoustic repairs.
  • Support the fingerboard extension during a refret.
  • Simulate top deflection by propping up the bridge—taking the guesswork out of neck resetting, saddle making, or setup work.

Pro luthiers share their praise for the Prop-Jack:

"It's so much faster to put in place and expand...I can go places that were practically unreachable before."
—Gary Brawer, Gary Brawer Guitar Repair

"The Prop-Jack is a big upgrade over the old turnbuckle-style jacks. It's lightweight, fast, and super efficient. I love how easy it is to position exactly where you need it and tighten with just one hand. It definitely makes clamping loose braces a breeze."
—Dusty Gregg, Gregg Guitars

"The Prop-Jack is a clever and elegantly simple piece of engineering...This makes it easy to work through the sound-hole and place the jack right where you want it with one hand. Tighten the threaded thumbwheel and you are done. I have six of them and they have made the process of regluing braces quick and easy, especially if you have to work fast with various glues. The Prop-Jack is not limited in its application as a brace jack, and there are other creative ways of using them in the shop. They are great time savers."
—Doug Graham, Ballona Creek Lutherie

"They're simple in construction, quick to maneuver, and easy to use. I like them for exactly what you'd expect: brace regluing. However, one of my other favorite uses is to prop up the center of a guitar neck while leveling in my workstation. This allows me to get a classical (or guitar without a truss rod) neck straight for leveling."
—Nate Wood, Stahman Guitars
"The Prop-Jack is a clever solution and an elegant design. It's lightweight, and easily and effortlessly manipulated with one hand. I can literally tighten or loosen this thing with one finger! The way it holds itself in place means you can make little adjustments here and there without it falling into the body of the guitar. That feature also makes it handy for dry runs for complicated clamping. The rubber feet are firm enough to stay put, but soft enough to not leave any marks behind. Both sizes are useful on their own, but I've found a set of four gets me in and out of even the most complicated internal repairs. These are a joy to use!"
—Justin Eisenman, Eisenman Guitars
