We use upcut and downcut bits extensively in our shops. Our team of builders and techs collected the bits we use every day for building, repair, and CNC work and combined them into this handy set. They use a standard 1/8" shank and can be used with both Dremel and Foredom tools, routers and laminate trimmers, and CNC machines with the appropriate size collet.

Upcut Bits cut a very clean bottom to the rout, with some fuzz around the top. These work well with harder woods like maple and ebony. We use upcut bits for jobs like saddle slot routing and clearing the insides of larger inlay routs like block inlays. They're ideal for deeper routs that need better chip removal. The smaller bits are perfect for cleaning out old glue and grime from fret slots.
Downcut Bits cut a very clean top edge of the rout with some fuzz around the bottom. These are perfect for jobs like cutting purflings and soundhole rosettes on softer woods like spruce and mahogany. We also use them for cutting inlay routs where you want a clean top edge with less possibility of grain tear out.
