Golden Age A-style Mandolin Tuners

Completely redesigned! Improved tuning for vintage-style mandolins, without giving up the authentic look.

Tired of fighting cantankerous old tuners but don't want to give up the vintage look? We have completely redesigned our Golden Age mandolin tuners! Under the direction of StewMac's Don MacRostie, renowned mandolin maker, we've brought back classic features of tuning machines from the pre-World War II era.

F-style models also available.

The look of the old, the reliability of the new.
The look is more authentic than ever, but close-tolerance specifications, nylon worm bearings, and 15:1 gear ratio make Golden Age tuners smoother and more efficient than vintage machines ever were. Two optional relic finishes duplicate that "well-played" patina that makes most other modern tuners look johnny-come-lately on a vintage or reproduction instrument. The distinctive Loar-shape steel baseplates even have the same footprint and engraving as 1920s originals.

The details are 1920s too:
Old-style string post shape
Square worm supports
Straight-slot worm gear screws
Roundhead straight-slot mounting screws
Vintage-shape black or ivoroid knobs

Each set includes:
• Pair of 4-left, 4-right tuning machines
• Press-fit peghead bushings
• Mounting screws

Gear ratio 15:1

String post diameter 0.236" (6mm)

String post spacing 29/32" standard (23mm)

Required peghole diameter .336" (8.53mm)

Installation Tips

Peghole spacing: Plate-mounted tuners can't work efficiently if the pegholes are improperly drilled. Our Mandolin Peghead Drill Jig ensures precise 29/32" spacing for accurate alignment for these tuning machines.

Bushings: We recommend the #2061 Bushing Reamer (.328" diameter) to cut a clean, accurate counterbore for a professional job. Fit the press-fit tuner bushings correctly so your tuners will work smoothly.

Mounting screws: Pilot holes required. Installing delicate screws into hard wood requires great care and accuracy. We highly recommend the #1714 Depth-stop Drill Bit (3/32" bit) for the pilot hole before installing these screws. Lubricate the screw threads with cutting lubricant (also wax or a bar of soap) to reduce friction and help them thread properly.
