Bois de Rose Back + Side Set - 028
In the world of guitarmaking, rare opportunities to acquire exceptional wood don’t come around often. When they do, it's crucial to take action.
THIS is one of those opportunities.
Bois de Rose, Dalbergia maritima
Bois de Rose (Dalbergia maritima) is a true rosewood from Madagascar, but uniquely distinct from the more widely known Madagascar Rosewood (Dalbergia baronii). This wood showcases a rich, deep wine-red color that oxidizes to a dark shade of purple, reminiscent of an eggplant. Its striking dark variegation lines and interlocking spiderweb patterns evoke the coveted beauty of Brazilian Rosewood.
Minimum Dimensions
- Back halves: 8-1/4" x 22" x 0.115" (210mm x 559mm x 2.9mm)
- Sides: 5" x 31-1/2" x 0.090" (127mm x 800mm x 2.3mm)
Very Rare, Very Special
Describing this wood as "rare" is an understatement. Legal sets of Bois de Rose are almost nonexistent. While it became illegal to export rosewoods from Madagascar in 2013 under CITES Appendix II, this particular wood was already cut and legally imported into Europe before the ban. Thanks to our partnership with Madinter in Spain, we can legally source this extraordinary wood for our U.S. customers.
Very Similar to Brazilian Rosewood
Bois de Rose is similar to Brazilian Rosewood in many respects. It is slightly denser but shares a comparable hardness, making it easy to bend and work with. How does it sound? The tones produced are rich and complex, full of thick overtones that builders and players treasure.
