Blister Quilted Spalted Maple, Acer saccharum
Spalted is not a species, but a process that happens when the wood is affected by a fungus. This causes a coloring and patterning to the wood that makes each piece completely unique. Colors range from golds, browns, blacks, and dark brown patches, often interwoven with hundreds of thin black lines.
This spalting creates a beautiful contrast with the 3D visual appearance of the blister quilt that will come alive under finish. You’ll find something new every time you pick up the instrument.
Working with Spalted Maple
While Spalted Maple may require slightly more care during workability due to small voids, the stunning visual result is undeniable. Voids are easily dealt with by filling them with Super Glue or epoxy. Many builders often add dye to their glue or epoxy fills to enhance the visual effect. Chip-out can occur with highly figured wood, but using razor-sharp cutters and taking light passes can help prevent this.
